Some 1,500 employees from the engineering field stand to benefit from the newly-launched Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) upgrading pathway for the Assembly and Test (A&T) sector within the next two years.

“Today's launch of the WSQ for the A&T sector is a specific initiative aimed at transforming the capabilities of the engineers in the sector now and into the future.

“The success of this initiative will directly strengthen the capabilities and value of our local engineers in this industry, and help to strengthen the Singapore core of PMEs – both mid-career and new entrants – in this industry,” said NTUC Deputy Secretary-General Heng Chee How, at the plan’s roll-out at Micron Semiconductor Asia Private Limited recently.

The A&T WSQ framework is the second for the semi-conductor industry, after the first was rolled out for the wafer fabrication sector in 2009.

Developed in partnership with UWEEI and several A&T multi-national corporations that have business operations in Singapore, the initiative will allow companies to upgrade the competencies of their employees across the board through three WSQ qualification levels – Diploma, Advanced Certificate and Certificate.
