The Labour Movement plans to flag off more inclusive games as the new season of the U Games 2017/2018 kicks off. This will also mark the games’ 10th season of the inter-union multi-sport tournament.
The corporate category, which was trialled in the 2016/2017 season with more than 50 companies participating, will be incorporated across all 10 sporting events in the new season.
This means more people from the extended Labour Movement family – members of U Associate, U SME and U FSE – will be able to participate in the U Games for the first time.
This was announced during the U Sports Awards Night on 3 August 2017, held in the recently expanded Wild Wild Wet at Downtown East.
A new social category will feature at selected games to add a non-competitive flavour. Novices will be able to learn the ropes at special sports clinics held before the games.
A Games Village will also be set up at four of the games. It will feature mini games and activities, making each game a fun day out for both players and supporters.
Honouring Achievements
The previous season of U Games saw more than 8,000 participants from 46 unions, making it one of the more fiercely competed seasons. The Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers’ Union (SMMWU) won the coveted Top Union Award for the sixth consecutive year.
Kamarudin Yahya from DBS Staff Union took the Sports Convenor of the Year award for rallying new members to join in the games.
