The 10th instalment of NTUC Club’s U Games drew to a close with the U Sports Awards Night held on 13 July 2018 at the Begonia Pavilion in Downtown East.
The Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) received the Top Union Award yet again – making it their seventh year running, while Most Improved Union went to the Union of ITE Training Staff (UITS).
UITS members took part in all 10 sporting events and finished eighth place, up from their previous 18th last year.
Pearl Lim and William Cheong from UITS said: “We are honoured to be given this award as it’s a big encouragement for us. It’s also heartening to see the enthusiasm of our participants, some of whom even registered as union members in order to take part in the Games. We look forward to more joining us the next season!”
For the first time, the U Sports Awards Night 2018 also handed out awards to the top three companies that participated in the corporate sector games. The top three companies were Accenture Pte Ltd, JP Morgan and ExxonMobil Singapore.
Accenture Technology Senior Manager Chan Kin Leong said: “This U Games was very well organised – it provided a social platform for my colleagues and I to bond over a common interest of sports, and allowed us to interact with sporting enthusiasts from other organisations, as well as the unions.”
Other awards included the Sports Convenor of the Year, which went to Josephine Tee from SMMWU for rallying new members to join in the U Games.
Josephine was also an exemplary convenor by participating in many of the Games including Sand-sation, Sepaktakraw and Futsal.
New Season
The Labour Movement also launched the 11th season of U Games during the U Sports Awards Night 2018.
From a humble beginning in 2008 with 10 sporting events and 2,000 participants, the 10th instalment of U Games have expanded to feature 7,500 participants from 42 unions and 45 corporate companies across 10 events.
The new season will start off with the Sand-Sation event at Mempari Beach, Sentosa, on 25 and 26 August 2018.
