We refer to the Straits Times report 'Injured workers avoiding firms' dorms', 24 September 2013.
The Migrant Workers' Centre (MWC) stands ready to help all migrant workers who need housing and other subsistence aid such as meals and other living needs. Since establishment in 2009, MWC has already housed, fed or represented over 7,000 workers. We encourage all destitute migrant workers to approach us for immediate assistance and will ensure that they receive the proper help that they need.
We are concerned that injured workers may resort to illegal employment to support themselves which opens them up to a range of abuses such as infringements of employment conditions, and health and safety requirements.
While migrant workers are currently educated on their entitlements and the work environment upon entrance and issuance of their Work Permits in Singapore, we agree that more can be done to continually engage migrant workers on their employment rights and the available help channels in Singapore.
Through MWC's initiatives that include a 24-hour helpline and free professional legal advice, we hope to give migrant workers direct, easy and round-the-clock assistance on any matter that might concern them. We will also step up our engagement efforts so that all migrant workers are aware that they have access to care and no distressed worker is unaware of who to turn to for help.
MWC strongly urges needy migrant workers to contact us at 6536-2692 or visit either of our two physical help-centres located at 62 Rangoon Road and 82, Lorong 23 Geylang to avoid risking their future employment or worse still, their health and welfare.
