The National Taxi Association (NTA) is pleased to note that the Ministry of Transport has agreed to raise the age limit for taxi drivers from 73 to 75 years old, subject to yearly medical check-ups.
We have in the past two years been championing this cause as we believe that drivers should be allowed to drive and contribute to the society as long as they are physically fit. The issue was brought up on various occasions such as the closed door dialogue with the then presidential candidate Dr Tony Tan, the dialogue with the Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong as well as meetings with the relevant authorities.
In fact, many of our senior members are still fit and healthy beyond the age of 73 and have expressed their wish to continue driving as they enjoy the work and have been providing taxi service for many years. Thus, we believe this change would benefit those drivers who are willing and able to continue driving and help them to remain active and contribute to society.
Last but not least, we would like to specially express our thanks to the President of Singapore as well as the Prime Minister for listening to us and supporting our call to make this a reality.
Mr Wee Boon Kim
President, NTA
