I refer to the article, “清洁工人请病假 需自掏腰包找人来替工”, dated 20 December 2010.
The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) set up the Unit for Contract and Casual Workers (UCCW) in June 2006 to help contract and casual workers in Singapore. UCCW aims to enhance the economic and social well-being of these workers by supporting them in skills training and upgrading so that they may take on better jobs with better wages and better benefits.
UCCW also promotes fair employment terms for these workers and advocates for them to receive Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions, Workfare Income Supplement (WIS), Workfare Training Supplement (WTS) and other benefits, especially healthcare and medical benefits.
To educate low-wage contract and casual workers on their employment rights and benefits, UCCW conducted eight seminars for them this year, in conjunction with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the CPF Board. We will be holding similar seminars next year to reach out to more contract and casual workers.
UCCW takes the well-being of contract and casual workers very seriously. We will work with MOM to blacklist contractors and service providers who exploit them under poor working conditions or short-change them of their rights and benefits.
We are concerned about the working conditions faced by the blogger’s relatives, as highlighted in the article. We have contacted them to offer our assistance. We will also be inviting them to join UCCW so that they can benefit from the suite of services that we provide.
We welcome all contract and casual workers to approach us for workplace and employment-related advice. We can be reached at 6473 4295 and uccw@ntuc.org.sg.
