In response to the changes in the Employment Act, NTUC’s Director for Legal Services and PME Unit Patrick Tay said that the Labour Movement is heartened that the revised EA is offering better protection, and to more working people in Singapore.
He said: “The EA sets the minimum employment terms and conditions in Singapore, hence it is a vital national employment protection net to working people in Singapore. We commend the Ministry’s revision of the salary cap for non-workmen from current $2,000 to $2,500, thus allowing more workers to be covered by the act.”
With regards to the extension of general provisions of the EA to more junior PMEs, Mr Tay noted that half of the PME populace will now be protected beyond salary protection.
“NTUC will continue to push for more working people, regardless of whether they are workmen, non-workmen or PMEs, to be protected under the labour law,” he added.
“We are pleased that with the new revision, an additional 450,000 working people will be protected under the Act. We will continue to work closely with our affiliated unions and tripartite partners to look at areas that will provide better protection to our working people.” - NTUC President Diana Chia
“With these changes to the EA, we will also be reviewing the Industrial Relations Act so that both Acts complement each other in creating a more conducive employment climate in Singapore.” - NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Cham Hui Fong
