The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is proud that veteran union leader Mr Abdul Samad Abdul Wahab has been appointed by the Special Select Committee as one of the nine Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs). Mr Samad is currently Vice-President of NTUC and the Secretary General of the Union of Power and Gas Employees.

As NMP, Mr Samad will act as an additional voice from the Labour Movement to speak up for workers and champion their interests. His areas of focus will be on strengthening Singaporean Core, expanding the Progressive Wage Model, and providing the middle-income sandwiched workers with employment and training support, as well as helping them to cope with the cost of living. With the swearing-in being in the next Parliament sitting, Mr Samad is expected to give his maiden speech at the upcoming Budget debate.

In response of his appointment, Mr Samad said, “It is a privilege and an honour to be appointed as the Nominated Member of Parliament. I am very much humbled by the appointment and am thankful for the encouragement and support the Labour Movement has given me. With the COVID-19 pandemic still affecting the lives and livelihoods of many, I hope to be able to address the immediate needs of my fellow workers and their families as an NMP. I look forward to expressing such concerns and aspirations directly to the policy makers in Parliament in order to help our workers achieve better wages, welfare and work prospects.”
