U Live, an initiative of National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), held their roadshow today in an effort to raise greater awareness on the re-employment rights of mature workers and encourage workers to be evergreen by staying healthy and embarking on lifelong learning. The roadshow, held at Boon Lay MRT station from 11 am to 6 pm, highlighted the key reasons for re-employment, debunked some of its common misconceptions and methods U Live are leveraging on, to make workplaces ageless.

Several close partners of U Live were also invited to set up booths at the roadshow to reach out to and showcase relevant support that they can provide for the mature workers. Centre for Seniors – one of the partners present – introduced its new LifeWork Programme that was developed to help mature workers and seniors plan and manage their work life transition, addressing the critical concerns of career, retirement, health and family before they reach the stage of successful and active ageing. The programme was designed taking into consideration the feedback received from union leaders and branch officials during focus group discussions organised by U Live.

Held in conjunction with the International Day for Older Persons, the roadshow was also a platform for the Labour Movement to show our appreciation and recognition for the hard work and contribution of mature workers. Together with Mr Heng Chee How, Deputy Secretary-General of NTUC and champion for mature workers, U Live made surprise visits and gave out tokens of appreciation to mature workers working at FairPrice Xtra, FairPrice and eight other retailers within Jurong Point shopping mall.

Retailers visited:

FairPrice Xtra
FairPrice
Yue Hwa Chinese Products
Universal traveller
Lian Hoe Gifts & Jade
Helen
Linen Gallery
Bee Cheng Hiang
Polar Cakes
Kuishin Bo Authentic Japanese Buffet

U Live hopes that by doing so, companies as well as members of the public can see the value that mature workers bring to the workforce and recognise that they are a pool of rich talent that can contribute productively to the workforce and economy. This will accord silver talents the same opportunities and treatment as they would any other person of a younger age and such a practice would only be to the company’s benefit in current tight labour market.

62-year-old Madam V Serateri was one of the mature workers the team visited. Working as a cashier at FairPrice Xtra, Madam Serateri expressed that she chose to stay in the workforce as it engages her and keeps her mind active. Echoing her sentiments is 64-year-old Mr David Looi who works at Yue Hua Chinese Products. Once a retiree, Mr Looi chose to re-enter the workforce as he wishes to continue expanding his social circle and increase his medical knowledge through working.
