Eligible union members can start applying for NTUC-U Care Fund’s assistance programmes from 15 June 2016. This year, NTUC-U Care Fund has packed in $2.675 million and $3.8 million worth of NTUC U Stretch Vouchers and NTUC U Care Back to School Vouchers for low-income union members respectively. Together, these amount to $6.475 million in assistance.
The NTUC-U Care Fund’s assistance programmes aim to lighten union members’ load arising from daily living expenses and school expenses of their children. Over the years, many low-income union members and their families have benefitted from the programmes. This year, the NTUC U Stretch Vouchers can potentially help 31,500 members defray their cost of living while NTUC U Care Back to School Vouchers can potentially benefit 30,400 members’ school-going children
Members can use the NTUC U Stretch Vouchers at three of NTUC Social Enterprises namely NTUC FairPrice supermarkets, NTUC Unity pharmacies and NTUC Unity Denticare clinics, and NTUC Foodfare food courts and coffee shops. Whereas for each successful applicant of NTUC U Care Back to School Vouchers, members can use the vouchers at various authorised retailers such as BATA shoe stores and Nanyang Optical stores.
Mr Zainal Bin Sapari, Assistant Secretary-General and Director, Care and Share, NTUC, said, “NTUC U Stretch and NTUC U Care Back to School Voucher programmes are some of our key financial assistance schemes aimed at helping our low income union members and their families to cope better with living and school expenses. Last year, we disbursed about $5.5m for these two schemes. Given the challenging times ahead, we expect more union members to apply for financial assistance and we look forward to the continued support from our donors to sustain these two schemes.”
The NTUC-U Care Fund would like to thank all its donors for their generous contributions, in particular the Singapore Labour Foundation, NTUC FairPrice Foundation, NTUC’s Social Enterprises such as NTUC Income and Mercatus, NTUC-affiliated unions and association, management and tripartite partners, as well as corporate and individual donors. It is through such generous giving to the NTUC-U Care Fund that enables the Labour Movement to continue its efforts in providing assistance to low-income union members and their families.
