Delivering her address at the May Day Dinner, NTUC President Diana Chia spoke about the roles of tripartism, workers and unions over the last 50 years in nation building.
President Chia said that tripartism is a key cornerstone of Singapore’s progress and the nation’s unique model should not be taken for granted.
“This relationship must continue to be nurtured and strengthened at all levels. Our tripartism system and vision must be robust enough to stand the test of time,” she said.
According to President Chia, another reason for Singapore’s transformation has been due to the efforts of workers from different collars, industries and generations.
“Because they have risen up to the challenge to continually upgrade themselves to be relevant in the global economy, we have prospered as a nation. In return, workers have also enjoyed a sustained increase in the standard of living for their families,” said President Chia.
Unions have also played an equally important role.
President Chia said: “Unions have not only protected and advanced the interests of workers. They have also modernised to be a key partner towards nation building by mobilising workers towards national initiatives that were critical for our nation’s survival and subsequent prosperity.”
