NTUC President Mary Liew and NTUC Secretary-General (SG) who is also the Minister in Prime Minister’s Office Ng Chee Meng, accompanied by key union representatives, visited Beijing, the People’s Republic of China from 13 to 15 November 2019 upon the invitation of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU).
NTUC President Mary Liew, NTUC SG Ng Chee Meng and the delegation met ACFTU Chairman Wang Dongming, who is also the Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, for the first time on 14 November 2019. Leaders on both sides reaffirmed the warm and positive ties between NTUC and ACFTU. There was mutual confidence that the visit would open the doors for further exchanges and strengthened cooperation at the trade union level. Union representatives from NTUC and ACFTU were also in attendance.
At the visit, both sides discussed the challenges and opportunities in the areas of training, catalysed by the advent of Industry 4.0. Recognising that workers are always at the heart of everything that we do, both sides exchanged views on the important role of the trade union, and further shared key strategies and areas of innovation to ensure relevance of union to workers.
The challenges brought about by an ageing population was another discussion topic that was brought to the fore. Citing old age care as a key challenge, ACFTU leaders appreciated the sharing of how NTUC and our social enterprises are setting the pace by raising the retirement and re-employment age for its workforce, ahead of the national schedule.
NTUC President Mary Liew said, “NTUC and ACFTU enjoy close and longstanding relations. In addition to the stream of exchange programmes that we have embarked on with ACFTU, this visit was a timely one for us to call upon Brother Wang Dongming and his team, to foster stronger connections and deepen partnerships with our Chinese counterparts, not only at the enterprise level but also through exchange opportunities in the future for our workforce.”
As part of the visit, the delegation was also hosted to two separate learning journeys to BHG Lifestyle (Supermarket) and Cheetah Mobile, where they experienced first-hand how both companies have leveraged digitalisation and employed robotics solutions to improve productivity and enhance overall consumer experience.
Led by NTUC President Mary Liew and NTUC Secretary-General who is also the Minister in Prime Minister’s Office Ng Chee Meng, the delegation comprised key union representatives such as NTUC Vice-President Abdul Samad Abdul Wahab, NTUC Central Committee Member Ken Tan and NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Desmond Choo.
