Today, the Labour Movement kicked start the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) National Delegates’ Conference (NDC) which is organised once every four years, with an Opening Dinner at the Orchid Country Club graced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as Guest-of-Honour.
National Delegates’ Conference - Opening Dinner
The NDC Opening Dinner was attended by some 1,100 NTUC-affiliated union delegates, representatives from the NTUC social enterprises and related organisations, tripartite partners, as well as international guests which included Director-General of the International Labour Organisation, Mr Guy Ryder.
After NTUC President Diana Chia delivered the welcome address at the dinner, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong delivered the keynote address. Representatives of the international guests who had attended the International Forum on Tripartism at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability earlier in the day, also delivered fraternal greetings at the dinner. The representatives were General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation – Asia Pacific, Mr Noriyuki Suzuki and President of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation, Mr Rikio Kozu.
International Forum on Tripartism
Jointly organised by the tripartite partners in Singapore – NTUC, the Ministry of Manpower and the Singapore National Employers Federation, the International Forum on Tripartism commemorates Singapore’s 50 years of Independence and membership with the International Labour Organisation. Themed “Tripartism for Sustainable Growth and Development”, the forum was attended by more than 800 participants from over 30 countries. Mr Guy Ryder and other senior tripartite representatives from Barbados, Denmark, Ireland, Japan and Singapore shared their views and experiences in strengthening tripartism for economic growth and social progress at the platform.
National Delegates’ Conference from 27 to 29 October 2015
Following the Opening Dinner, there will be a three-day NDC from 27 to 29 October 2015. The purpose of the conference is for the Labour Movement (LM) to formulate the direction that it would take in the next four years to help working people at work, live and play, and to contribute towards Singapore’s social and economic progress. The new 21-member NTUC Central Committee for the four-year term of 2015 to 2019 will also be elected by secret ballot at the conference.
The NDC will be attended by some 800 union delegates and observers – who represent the 60 NTUC-affiliated unions and one association, and will participate in the planning of the key goals towards LM2019.
