Workers at the heart of everything we do
“Placing workers at the heart of everything we do” was the key focus of the Labour Movement’s May Day 2019 celebrations as NTUC Secretary-General (SG) Ng Chee Meng reaffirmed the Labour Movement’s commitment in striving for better wages, welfare and work prospects for all workers in Singapore. Addressing the crowd at May Day Rally 2019 for the first time as Labour Chief, NTUC SG expressed the LM’s appreciation towards the union leaders who have improved the lives of workers and were pivotal in building the strong foundation of tripartism over the last 50 years since the “Trade Union Seminar on Modernization of the Labour Movement” in 1969.

Enterprise Development Grant for unionised companies
Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Minister for Finance, Heng Swee Keat, Special Guest at NTUC May Day Rally 2019, reaffirmed the symbiotic relationship between the PAP Government and the Labour Movement. He also emphasised that the fourth-generation leadership transition will build on the fundamentals of the relationship and work hand in hand with the Labour Movement to tackle challenges ahead.

In his keynote address, DPM Heng announced that with effect from 1 Apr 2020, unionised companies that apply for the Enterprise Development Grant (EDG) will receive a total of 80% funding support if they form a company training committee and commit to increasing salaries of workers. This is an additional 10% grant for unionised companies.

May Day Rally 2019
More than 1,600 guests, comprising union leaders and tripartite partners were in attendance today at NTUC May Day Rally 2019 as LM celebrated the tenacity and contributions of union leaders and tripartite partners in uplifting the lives of workers over the past few decades.

Two short films were featured in commemoration of NTUC’s landmark seminar in 1969. One of the films showed how LM is instrumental in helping make lives better for workers through the stories of three profiles – a union leader who fought relentlessly for workers, a union member who progresses as a lifelong learner and a worker who pushes on with the help of NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute). The other film focuses on the unrelenting pursuit to make every worker’s life better, from 1961 to today and into tomorrow, in every union, through every leader, for every worker. Please refer to Annex A for stories of the profiles featured.

NTUC and its affiliated unions will be working closely with companies to implement Company Training Committees through 3As – Acceptance of Technology, Adoption of Technology and Actualisation of Business Model. The Labour Movement is committed to help workers reskill and upskill into new and higher value-added jobs.
