This year, on the first day of Lunar New Year, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and key union leaders greeted more than 200 workers in Changi Airport Terminal 2 in a visit led by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).

The Prime Minister and Mrs Lee were accompanied by NTUC President Mary Liew, NTUC Secretary-General Chan Chun Sing, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Transport Josephine Teo, and NTUC Central Committee members.

Since 1999, key leaders from NTUC have visited workers working in the essential services during the Lunar New Year to thank them for putting their work and duties ahead of their holidays and personal celebrations.

The visit to Changi Airport is to show the Labour Movement’s appreciation to both front-end and back-end workers who keep Singapore’s airport running 24/7. Workers at Changi Airport are represented by 10 unions under the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation Cluster (see Annex A for the list of unions).

At the visit, Prime Minister Lee gave out red packets and mandarin oranges as well as cookies provided by Mrs Lee. They met taxi drivers, trolley retrievers, customer service agents, cleaners, cabin crew, and immigration and security officers. They also met workers who work behind the scenes, such as air traffic controllers, baggage handlers, ramp staff, aircraft interior cleaners, and aircraft technicians and engineers. The visit ended in a ‘Lo Hei’ session with workers, union representatives and management partners.
