The Labour Movement formed a new union for the logistics sector on 30 April 2018, and it’s called the Supply Chain Employees’ Union (SCEU).
What’s the role of this new union, you might ask?
Well first, it will look after the needs and interests of workers in the logistics and supply chain management sector.
And second, the new union will help the logistics sector harmonise and prepare workers for future skills and jobs, in line with the Logistics Industry Transformation Map.
ST Logistics is the first company to come onboard the new union, with its 800-strong workforce being offered union membership.
The company has more than 40 years of experience providing Supply Chain Management and Integrated Logistics Solutions to sectors like defence, Government and healthcare.
NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Cham Hui Fong said SCEU will serve as an “aggregator, to bring together industry players, businesses, economic agencies, trade associations and institutes of higher learning.”
It will pool resources to work on innovation and productivity, and in turn, raise professionalism and enhance jobs, skills and wages in the logistics sector, she added.
On joining the Labour Movement, ST Logistics CEO Vincent Phang, said: “ST Logistics is proud to be a pioneer member of this new union, and we are happy to partner the Labour Movement in implementing the Government’s Logistics Industry Transformation Map.”
In a media statement announcing the new union, NTUC said it sees synergies and collaborations between its network of unions, NTUC U Associate partners, and trade associations to grow the industry and prepare it for future changes.
“The Labour Movement will also progressively work on expanding and leveraging its network, forming industry alliances with professional associations and SMEs (small- and medium-sized enterprises) to reach out to more employers and working people in the logistics and supply chain management sector,” added NTUC.
