On a night where co-operatives were honoured for their significant contributions and achievements, the spotlight shone on NTUC Fairprice Co-operative Limited when it was awarded the “Special Rochdale Award” at the Singapore National Co-operative Federation (SNCF) Honour Awards 2013.
This is a new category nominated by SNCF to recognise the work the co-operative has consistently accomplished in the last 15 years since it was awarded the highest honour of the Rochdale Plaque in 1998.
Through the years the co-operative has been known for stretching the dollar for its members, especially during economic recessions, by holding prices, offering discounts on daily essentials or even being the first to drop prices to help cushion rising food costs.
To date, its charity arm NTUC FairPrice Foundation has donated over $35 million to various initiatives to mainly benefit low-income workers and needy families.
NTUC FairPrice Chairman Ng Ser Miang was also awarded the “Rochdale Medal”. He was recognised for his many efforts, such as initiating further price cuts during the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 in support of the various co-operative's efforts to ease the financial burden of its members during the tough time.
Mr Ng has received numerous awards, which are a testament to his dedication to the roles he has undertaken. One of them includes the Public Service Star, a National Day Award by the Singapore Government.
