Training, Training, Training
“Training, training, training” was the rallying call made by NTUC Secretary-General (SG) Chan Chun Sing in the lead up to the Labour Movement’s (LM) May Day 2018 celebrations, as he reiterated the LM’s focus in helping to place today’s displaced workers into today’s jobs and equally important, placing tomorrow’s unemployed into tomorrow’s jobs. Underlying this unwavering intent is the LM’s deep-held belief that a job is the best welfare for our working people and their employability is key to having a good job.
$200 Million Raised for NTUC-Education and Training Fund
At the May Day Rally 2016, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that the Government would provide a 1:3 matching grant of up to a cap of $150 million as additional funding support to the NTUC-Education and Training Fund (NETF) so that more union members can enjoy training subsidies and be encouraged to go for upskilling.
Two years on, the LM has raised a total of $50 million through sponsorships and achieved its target of injecting $200 million into the NETF. This was announced by SG Chan at the May Day Rally 2018 held today at the Downtown East, with more than 1,600 guests, comprising union leaders; tripartite partners; partners from U Associate, U SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) and U FSE (Freelancers and Self-Employed); and NTUC social enterprises, in attendance.
This NETF fundraising achievement could have only been made possible with the strong and generous support from our sponsors, who share the same vision as the LM on the need to train Singapore’s workforce for the future. Our sponsors include: OUE Executive Chairman, Mr Stephen Riady; corporate donors like CapitaLand Limited, DBS Bank Ltd, Mini Environment Service Pte Ltd, PSA Corporation Limited, Singapore Airlines Limited, Singapore Telecommunications Limited, SP Group, Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd; NTUC social enterprises, namely, NTUC FairPrice, NTUC Income, NTUC Choice Homes and NTUC First Campus; and our affiliated unions and U Network partners.
Ramping Up Labour Movement’s Training Capabilities
As industries and business models continue to evolve and transform, the urgency for our working people to embrace continuous lifelong learning and training is even more important. The LM will be ramping up its training capabilities and rolling out more bite-sized training modules that are customisable and easily accessible so that working people can decide on their own learning and training anytime and anywhere in the shortest possible time.
U Leap Enterprise, an initiative under NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute), was launched today, to bring more working people onto the mobile learning platform through closed group access for workers to take on company-specific training. (Please refer to e2i’s media release for more details).
With our working people at the core of all of the LM’s efforts, the LM will continue to evolve so that we remain strong, representative and relevant, to help all working people attain better skills, better jobs and better lives as the economy transforms. (Please refer to Annex 1 on the new initiatives and partnerships that the LM is rolling out to bring greater opportunities and better services to all working people.)
