In a tribute to the late Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first Prime Minister, NTUC Club Communities organised a special tree planting event on 16 September 2023 at Pasir Ris Park.
The occasion marked the 100th birth anniversary of Mr Lee, who was fondly known as the Republic’s Chief Gardener. Mr Lee initiated the nation’s first tree-planting campaign back in 1963.
NTUC Deputy Secretary-General Heng Chee How was the special guest at the event which saw participation from more than 150 individuals from NTUC Club communities, including eXplorerkid, nEbO, and U Live.
In his opening speech, Mr Heng lauded the efforts of the communities gathered and reminded them of Mr Lee’s enduring legacy.
“We are here today to remember our founding Prime Minister’s life and accomplishments, the values and principles he stood for, and to carry on his legacy to future generations,” he said.
Other esteemed attendees included NTUC Central Committee Member and nEbO Advisory Committee Chairman Lim Wen Sheng; NTUC Central Committee Member and U Live Advisory Committee Chairman Ken Tan; and representatives from the National Parks Board (NParks).
A total of 50 coastal and native trees were planted during the event.
These trees are expected to contribute to the ongoing OneMillionTrees movement spearheaded by NParks. The nationwide initiative aims to plant one million more trees by 2030, bolstering Singapore’s reputation as a City in Nature.
The initiative not only commemorates Mr Lee’s passion for greening Singapore but also serves as an educational experience for younger generations.
