“NTUC Care and Share Voucher” Scheme $1.6 million to assist 20,000 lower-income union members

1. A new scheme - “NTUC Care and Share Voucher” - worth $ 1.6 million will be introduced to assist 20,000 low-income union members to cope with the effects of the recent utility bills and transport fare increases, arising from the unusual spike in fuel prices.
2. Fully sponsored by the Singapore Labour Foundation (SLF), the two-tiered voucher worth $80 dollars comprises of:
a. A cash portion in the form of “direct payment” to Singapore Power (SP) Services for the utility bills (worth $50 dollars); and
b. A cash portion in the form of a “voucher” to top up EZ-link card (worth $30 dollars)
3. Union members whose total gross household monthly income equal or below $1,500, or whose per capita income is no more than $450 (if household income is more than $1,500) are eligible.
4. The assistance scheme is to provide relief to lower income union members who are hit by the recent increase in transport fares and utility charges.
5. Mr Ong Ah Heng, Director of Community Development Department, NTUC said, “The objective of this scheme is to assist union members who are in financial hardship, in particular the low-income workers. The labour movement would like to help alleviate their financial burdens. The utilities and transport vouchers will benefit our union members directly”
6. The application for “NTUC Care and Share Vouchers” will open from 1 October to 31 October 2006. Successful applicants can look forward to receive their vouchers in early November 2006.
7. Ordinary Branch union members can apply directly to the respective unions they belong to.
