The taxi industry has undergone a rapid digital transformation over the last few years.

Today, many commuters rely less on-street hail and cash payments, opting to use mobile ride apps and go cashless when getting around.

However, job opportunities are still plenty for cabbies if they know how to make use of relevant apps and other tech to find passengers, secure bookings and navigate more efficiently.

To help cabbies keep up with technology and seize opportunities in the industry, the National Taxi Association (NTA) and ComfortDelGro Taxi have formed a training committee.

The training committee will help raise awareness on job opportunities created by technology, gather feedback about current training plans, identify training gaps and help train cabbies.

SkillsFuture For Digital Workplace Course

For a start, ComfortDelGro Taxi will be sending 10,000 cabbies for a customised SkillsFuture for Digital Workplace (SFDW) course.

The training will be supported by NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) and NTUC LearningHub.

The course is part of a national initiative by SkillsFuture Singapore to help Singaporeans achieve the correct mindset and basic skills to prepare them for the future economy.

The curriculum was designed to focus on hands-on learning so that participants can easily apply what they learnt to their work. The customised courses will see cabbies learn to use ComfortDelGro taxi apps, its Cabby Portal and Mobile Data Terminal (MDT).

All 10,000 cabbies are expected to finish the course by 2020. To date, some 150 leaders from NTA have already attended the pilot SFDW classes.

“I’m glad I went for the course. Not only did I learn more about the ComforDelGro driver app and the MDT, but also other apps such as Waze and Parking.sg. By learning how to use these apps, I am better equipped as a cabby to take on more jobs and earn more,” said cabby Pek Ban Choon, 60.

Working together, the committee will assess skills development gaps in the company, articulate Worker 4.0 and training requirements for the company, drive company-based training programmes identified in the company's Worker 4.0 plan, and coordinate feedback for training improvements.
