Private hire vehicles (PHVs) are an important part of Singapore’s public transport system to provide point-to-point transport service. To further bolster Singapore’s Land Transport Master Plan 2040, the National Private Hire Vehicles Association (NPHVA) has previously put forth their recommendations on the need to involve chauffeured ride services and one of the key focus areas is drivers’ training.

To support our PHV drivers in their skills upgrading journey, NPHVA is working with various partners on a series of customised training courses. The aim of these courses is to upskill our PHV drivers and ensure that they have access to the refresher courses on road safety and driving. We want to supplement these with other courses to enable them to explore other business opportunities and sustain their livelihoods.

Piloting the Safe and Gracious Driver Initiative

Kickstarting the series of training courses is the pilot of the Safe and Gracious Driver Initiative by NPHVA and Singapore Kindness Movement. Developed by NTUC LearningHub, supported by sector partners like the Land Transport Authority and Traffic Police, as well as platform operators like Ryde Technologies and TADA Singapore, this initiative aims to refresh member drivers with the essentials of safe driving. Some of the key training topics include driving in adverse weather conditions and assisting wheelchair-bound passengers. About 8,000 member drivers are expected to benefit from the pilot.

The course is fully online and modular in nature to accommodate the schedules of our PHV drivers. NPHVA has also worked with sectoral and training partners, as well as platform operators to fully subsidise the course fees for all member drivers to further encourage sign-ups. NPHVA will be contacting members on the sign-up process. PHV drivers who are currently non-members can join NPHVA as a member to be eligible for the free training courses.

More online courses will be made available in future

Moving forward, NPHVA will be working with NTUC LearningHub to offer member drivers complimentary access to more than 60 online courses in the areas of safe driving and customer care, business fundamentals, digital marketing, communication, and personal development, including emotional resilience and mental well-being. Given the nature of their jobs, the online courses will also be modular in nature, allowing drivers to learn at their own pace and time. NPHVA will continue to explore suitable training opportunities with other partners to expand the range of courses that are available for our member drivers.

NPHVA Advisor Yeo Wan Ling said, “Recognising the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our PHV drivers, NPHVA has been providing greater financial and welfare support to help tide them through this difficult period. Every bit of help counts, and we hope that our member drivers will take advantage of the training made available to upgrade themselves in order to remain relevant and stay resilient. Even as Singapore prepares for post-COVID-19 recovery, NPHVA will continue to work closely with the Government and industry partners to further the interests and livelihoods of our PHV member drivers.”
