John Britto’s life back in India was all about sharing what little he had with friends and family, no matter whether it was food or money.

When John stepped off the plane at Changi Airport 18 years ago, his luggage was packed with hopes and dreams of making life better not only for himself but his loved ones as well.

“I believe everyone deserves to be happy. If I can make my family and friends happy, then everything is okay,” he said.

Other than sending money back home every month, he puts money into a trust fund he created in India to help feed and clothe orphans.

He started as a landscape technician when he first started work in Singapore. Today, John is a supervisor and a lorry driver for Ho Eng Huat Construction.

“When I came to Singapore, I met many people from all over the world who were like me. They came to Singapore to earn a better living. But the problem was, some of my friends working at other companies faced problems with their bosses. They didn’t get their salaries, and sometimes they were bullied by their bosses,” said John.

Thankfully for John, his boss treats him and his colleagues well. His boss was the one who introduced him to the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) seven years ago.

“When I learnt more about how MWC helps foreign workers, I wanted to be part of it. I wanted to help my friends who were facing problems at work. I decided to volunteer my time with MWC so I could help more people. This way, I can share their happiness and their sadness,” he said.

Now, John directs foreign workers he meets to the MWC when they tell him their problems.

He’s also knowledgeable enough to advise them on basic laws, workplace safety and even the local culture.

Whenever MWC organises activities such as trips to a nursing home to bring cheer to the elderly, John is always among the volunteers.

“What is life if you don’t try to make people happy?” he said.
