Preschools NTUC My First Skool (Kang Ching and Yung An) are going the green route with ‘Clean Up South West!’ with a message for the young ones to be more aware of the environment.

‘Clean Up South West!’ is an annual recycling drive organised by the South West Community Development Council (CDC) and National Environment Agency (South West Regional Office). The district-wide event encourages the community to exchange unwanted recyclables, such as clothes and newspapers, for groceries, which will go to vulnerable families in the neighbourhood.

“When good habits form at childhood, they can stay with us for a lifetime. That’s why we are involving preschoolers in this year’s ‘Clean Up South West!’. By starting them from an early age, we are nurturing in them a keen sense of the environment and the need for sustainable practices,” said South West District Mayor Low Yen Ling.

Active Learners

For the month of January, 360 children from the two preschools will bring their family’s recyclables to school. At the end of January’s collection period on 26 January 2017, the children will have been involved in the sorting out and weighing of the recyclables, with guidance from the teaching staff.

My First Skool (Yung Ann) Executive Principal Nur Zalina Ismail said: “At My First Skool, we believe that children are active learners. Through this recycling project, the children will get to learn about conservation and actively help in saving the earth. We are happy to partner the South West CDC on this project. Together, we can work together to build a society that cares.”

‘Clean Up South West!’ was first launched 12 years ago. As of last year, 737,500kg of recyclables have been collected.
