Forty-seven-year-old Security Auditor Wong Lee Pheng at Digital Security company Gemalto has made several educated moves to get to where she is today.
Seeking Opportunity
Ms Wong seized the opportunity to work at Gemalto, a company that deals with printing bank cards, as a Line Operator in the year 2000 after being retrenched from her previous company where she worked as an Administrative Support Assistant.
Supporting her three children, Ms Wong knew she had to land a post that compensated more than what her Secondary Four education could allow, for her husband worked as a driver and was struggling to make ends meet.
Building On Opportunities
Joining Gemalto was a quick decision on her part but soon, she developed a strong liking for role. In just three years she was promoted to Senior Operator and moved on to the role of Coordinator three years later.
As content as she was with her gradual progression, she yearned for a post within the company that was not shift-based, as she wanted to spend more time with her children.
In 2008, she saw an internal opening for the role of Security Assistant in the Security Department. Not having the knowledge or skills for the job-scope did not deter her.
A regular at courses organised by her company as well as those by her union, United Workers of Electronics & Electrical Industries (UWEEI), she took on her biggest challenge yet – to acquire a Diploma in Security Management.
"The management here has been very supportive of me wanting to constantly upgrade myself," she said.
She was promoted to Security Auditor in 2012.
The drive to upgrade herself has not gone unnoticed with management as she is now a nominee for the May Day Model Partnership Awards 2015.
Giving Back
Now working in a team of five, Ms Wong’s motivation has rubbed off on her colleagues.
”They are more interested in lifelong learning now for they can see through me that such motivation is worth it,” she said.
Her work ethic has also influenced her children, with her oldest son, 30, working as a Logistic Assistant in Gemalto for around eight years now.
A big believer in Labour-Management-Relations as well, Ms Wong joined UWEEI in 2007, only to assume the position of Branch Chairman of Gemalto last year. Passionate about getting more people on board as members, she sees attaining a Diploma in Industrial Relations as one of her many goals for the near future. So how does she do it all?
“It is all about effective time management, and with enough drive, you can have family, a career and develop your interests,” she added.
