Singapore, 22 April 2012 - In celebration of the Bengali New Year with our Bengali migrant worker community, Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC), a bipartite initiative of the National Trades Union Congress and the Singapore National Employers Federation, will stage a roadshow at the Kaki Bukit Recreation Centre.

Starting at 5pm, the MWC Bengali New Year Fiesta 2012 is aimed at promoting integration and harmonious relations within the migrant worker community as well as between these workers and locals. The five-hour celebration will give Bengali workers an opportunity to celebrate the festive occasion.

MWC’s static exhibition on local customs and practices in the Bengali language will be featured and some 4,000 guests can be expected to be entertained with stage games as well as performances. Guests comprise the Bengali community as well as other workers from foreign-worker dormitories. Popular Bengali artistes like Ajoy and Nazu will be specially flown in to mark the happy occasion.

Executive director of MWC Edwin Pang explained his thoughts on the event. “This New Year celebration for Bengali workers is the third event in MWC’s series of cultural celebrations for the different groups of migrants working in Singapore. Last year, we held a Mid-Autumn Festival Variety Show for Chinese workers and Deepavali @ The Singapore Flyer for Indian workers. Through these events, we hope to assure the migrant workers that they are not alone in Singapore and that though they are far away from home, MWC is here for them to celebrate the good times and to help them resolve their problems in difficult ones.”
