The Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) noted that B-Construction Pte Ltd was convicted in the State Courts on 1 December for housing foreign workers in unapproved accommodation. Below is the response from Mr Yeo Guat Kwang, Chairman of MWC, for your reporting please.
“With reference to media reports on B-Construction’s conviction in the State Courts yesterday for migrant worker housing offences, we welcome the authorities’ strong message of deterrence against employers who short-change their workers on proper housing conditions. Approved, safe and clean living environments are in the MWC’s opinion, the minimum that employers must provide to their workers.
In this present case, we are heartened to learn that upon detection, the affected workers were moved to better appointed, approved lodgings without delay, as the authorities carried out their investigations against the errant employer.
We request the authorities to continue their strong enforcement. We also urge migrant workers who are forced to put up with sub-standard, unapproved housing, or who have any complaints regarding their living conditions to call MWC’s 24-hour helpline at 6536 2692 for assistance.”
