As part of May Day celebrations this year, 78 model workers and companies received the May Day Model Partnership Awards today for their outstanding contributions towards the Labour Movement 2015 vision of “Better Jobs for All”. More than 250 awardees, together with tripartite partners who played a significant role in supporting them, were honoured as role models for their exemplary partnerships.
The May Day Model Partnership Awards 2012 are conferred to model workers, companies and unions who had worked together to (i) raise productivity and implement gain sharing; (ii) increase their job worth through continuous skills upgrading; or (iii) promote a more resilient and adaptive workplace.
Through collaborations with partners from the unions, government and workers, many companies had helped equip their workers with the means to stay competitive. For that, the Institutional Category Awards recognised 39 institutions and 109 partners, who made efforts at improving productivity of the company and skills of their workers; and creating a more inclusive workforce.
The Individual Category Awards recognised 39 individuals and commended 85 partners comprising colleagues, employers, trainers or families for playing a significant role in supporting the achievements of these individuals. The youngest individual recipient this year is 26 years old, while the oldest is 65 years old. Additionally, 53 per cent of the recipients are male while the rest are females. (Refer to Annex A for a breakdown of the awards.)
“The importance of partnerships in helping our economy achieve healthy job creation and helping our workforce strive for better jobs and better wages is exemplified through the efforts and achievements of our awardees and their partners. Productivity improvement and gain sharing should be an all-inclusive effort and ought to be led by our companies and supported by our workforce. This is the right way to sustain future growth for our workers, companies and the economy,” said Mr Edwin Lye, Co-Chairman of the NTUC May Day Model Partnership Awards Organising Committee and Member of the NTUC Central Committee.
The awardees and their partners received trophies from tripartite Guests-of-Honour, Minister of State for Manpower and National Development Tan Chuan-Jin, Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) President Stephen Lee and NTUC President Diana Chia at the award ceremony. The awardees and guests were hosted by NTUC Deputy Secretary-General, Heng Chee How, who gave the opening address.
A total of 800 people attended the Awards Ceremony. Prior to the ceremony, all awardees were treated to an exclusive closed-door evening party with their family members at the Downtown East on 18 May 2012.
