May Day Family Day Out With U
30 May 2009
Media Release
1. Recognising that family and social support are integral in building personal resilience during a downturn, the Labour Movement, together with NTUC Club, organised the May Day Family Day Out With U carnival today at the Downtown East for 40,000, an increase from 25,000 in 2008, union members and their families. Also held in support of the National Family Celebrations, the carnival aims to bond and strengthen ties among union members and their families through kampong-style family challenges, games and all-day entertainment.
2. To enhance the spirit of camaraderie in the all-inclusive Labour Movement, an Inter-Union U Games 2008/2009 challenge has been organised since September last year for union representatives to participate in teams that consist members from all collars, ages and nationalities. Today’s Mega-Telematch activity will also be the grand finale to the year-long U Games 2008/2009, where the top four teams with the highest total scores, out of 26 participating union teams, will be announced.
3. To show their active support for the U Games, the NTUC Central Committee (NTUC CC) members have also formed a team to pit their sporting skills against the other union participants in the Mega Telematch. Starting off with a Soccer Penalty Shoot Out game, NTUC CC members will take a penalty shot from three metres away onto a game board, aiming at goal shots with different scores. The team will then proceed to complete the following Mega-Telematch challenges; Shuttle relay run, Golf ‘Putt and chip’, High striker, balancing board, trolley, cup stacking, bowling, basketball shoot out and end off with the Strong Man race.
4. Sharing his thoughts as captain for the NTUC CC team in the Mega Telematch games, Mr Edwin Lye, NTUC CC Member and Co-Chairman of the May Day Family Day Out With U, said,”As we tackle the various challenges of the telematch games today, it is evident that working together as a team with my fellow NTUC CC members often makes completing each task easier. In the same way, as we face the challenges of a downturn, unions are committed to working together with our members to help build resilience within the Labour Movement family.”
5. In order to reach out to lower income union members and their families during this downturn, the Labour Movement also announced programme roll-outs of the Labour Movement U Care Fund at the May Day Family Day Out With U. With enhancements to existing programmes and ad-hoc relief programmes, the Labour Movement hopes to extend assistance to more union members and their families.
