This year’s May Day Awards recognises outstanding men, women and organisations that have created a significant impact on the lives of workers in Singapore. From holding events and engagements to forging partnerships and launching new initiatives, their contributions are deeply felt by various business units in the Labour Movement who stepped forward to nominate them.

Er. Edwin Khew Teck Fook, President, The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (Working People’s Advocate)

The Chief Fellowship Officer among our U Associate (UA) leaders, Edwin helps to bond all the UA leaders with the aim to promote cross-pollination of ideas between the different professional guilds and strengthen the working relationships. He cares about relationship building and development of friendship amongst the leaders so that they can contribute to steering the careers and professional development of the working people. He is always the go-to person when there are challenges and follows through projects with NTUC by providing valuable advice to the working-level teams. The Institution of Engineers, Singapore is a strategic partner of UA and Edwin plays an important role in as a steering committee member for all IES-NTUC engineering sectoral programmes.

James Ng, Managing Director, HDT Singapore Taxi Pte Ltd (Working People’s Advocate)

HDT Singapore Taxi offers transport services with a difference. Not only are the electric taxis emission-free and quiet, they are also driven by full-time employees of the company. James designed the employment programme, which is different from the traditional rent and hire model. He worked closely with NTUC’s e2i to develop customised Work-Trial and Place-and-Train programmes that allow locals to understand the job of an employed taxi driver before they sign up with the HDT. The collaboration aims to raise the industry standards by promoting positive competition while raising the welfare benefits for taxi drivers in Singapore.

ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited (Partner of Labour Movement)

As the largest player in the taxi industry, ComfortDelGro Taxi has collaborated with NTUC's e2i to establish TransportSG – a centre to facilitate the testing and certification of locals to obtain vocational driving licenses. With the aim of attracting and retaining drivers, the taxi operator piloted the Work Immersion Programme with e2i to promote upskilling for taxi drivers. The programme supports locals on a 12-day (up to 96 hours) work trial to gain insights and training. ComfortDelGro is also willing to invest in the knowledge and skillsets of their drivers, and reward new drivers with monetary incentives upon completion of the immersion programme.

Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (Partner of Labour Movement)

Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS) has always worked closely with NTUC U Associate (UA) to explore areas of collaboration for the sustainable energy cluster. The association has offered subsides for union members for their training courses where applicable, supported relevant events through their established network, and provided knowledge-based support whenever necessary. In October 2017, the NTUC OPEC Cluster Union-UA Alliance was formed to uplift standards and improve employability of workers in OPEC industries. SEAS pledged to support this initiative and participated in a roundtable discussion to roll out the alliance. SEAS also supported the Young NTUC Green Jobs Symposium in November 2017 to raise awareness of green jobs amongst students and offer career opportunities in the sector.

StarHub Ltd (Partner of Labour Movement)

StarHub has been a partner of the Labour Movement since 2013 as one of NTUC Link’s merchants on the Plus! Rewards LinkPoints programme. In October 2017, StarHub signed a three-year strategic partnership with NTUC Membership which provided generous, discounted mobile plans with free 3GB data and other value-added services. The collaboration helped union members stretch their dollar and learn on-the-go. In a short span of three months, the total savings brought to our union members was over $2 million. Since February 2018, NTUC’s affiliated unions, network of partners and members have free access to learning journeys at StarHub’s innovation centre Hubtricity which showcases how Smart Nation capabilities can improve the quality of people’s lives and help businesses operate more efficiently and effectively.
