He left home in search of a better future. On 20 June 2012, 33-year-old Indian national, Karthikeyan Sivanandam, started working in Singapore as a Mechanical Engineer Assistant in an engineering company.
But things quickly fell apart for the S Pass holder. His company would deduct between S$320 and S$390 every month, something not sanctioned by the Employment Act.
After nearly a year, Mr Karthikeyan finally turned to the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) for help. He resigned from his job and was advised by MWC to take the matter up with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).
Because he has to go home for his wedding in August, MWC urged MOM to speed up the investigation of his case. Mr Karthikeyan will most likely be able to return home soon and collect his salary that was unlawfully deducted. For all the help rendered by MWC and the reassurances given, Mr Karthikeyan has expressed his heartfelt thanks.
