The Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) plans to work with the Singapore School and Private Hire Bus Owners’ Association (SSPHBOA), the Singapore School Transport Association (SSTA) and the Dormitory Association of Singapore Limited (DASL) to enhance the accessibility and safety of transportation for migrant workers to various places of leisure during the busy weekend periods.
At the annual SSPHBOA Lunar New Year Dinner on 8 February 2014, MWC stated its commitment to work with the association on enhanced transport services, which will include exploring new routes and improving bus scheduling and safety measures at pick-up and drop-off locations. Currently there are more than 200 buses transporting migrant workers to and from popular leisure spots during their rest-days.
The collaboration between the organisations will also allow MWC to reach out to the migrant workers who use this transportation system on the weekends, by disseminating the MWC brochures on buses to convey information on employment rights and fair working conditions in the various migrant worker languages (English, Mandarin, Tamil and Bengali). In buses with audiovisual systems, MWC videos illustrating the types of real-life cases that MWC has attended to along with workers’ testimonials will be played. With this new form of outreach, MWC hopes that more workers will become aware of MWC’s services and share the news with their friends.
In his speech before the newly elected executive committee and members of SSPHBOA, Mr Yeo Guat Kwang, Chairman of MWC shared this plan to work with the SSPHBOA, SSTA and DASL to better the weekend transportation system for migrant workers.
