In a media statement issued today, the Migrant Workers' Centre (MWC) said it was dismayed to hear of the protest by two migrant workers at Jurong Port Road this morning, especially in the light of recent developments.
MWC said the incident came as a further reminder to them of the need to expand their outreach and engagement with migrant workers to raise their awareness of channels of help available to them.
“We have contacted the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) about the case and on our hope that they are given a fair opportunity to air their grievances. In the meantime, we are confident that MOM will be able to achieve an outcome, with the workers and their employers, which is satisfactory to all concerned.
“We would like to assure the workers that the MWC will monitor the developments in this case and will step in to assist them if the need arises.
“We are gravely concerned about the interests and welfare of our migrant workers and would like to reiterate our call to them to abide by established channels of assistance, either through MOM, MWC or any other migrant organisation set up to champion their welfare, and not to take matters into their own hands,” said Mr Yeo Guat Kwang, Chairman of Migrant Workers’ Centre.
About Migrant Workers’ Centre
The Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) is a bipartite effort between the National Trades Union Congress and the Singapore National Employers Federation to improve the welfare of migrant workers in Singapore.
Set up on 26 April 2009, the MWC aims to promote responsible employment practices among employers, educate migrant workers on their employment rights, and enhance the social support infrastructure to help them better integrate into the Singapore society.
Through humanitarian support, community engagements and educational programmes, MWC serves as a contact point for foreign workers and facilitates their harmonious co-existence with locals.
Migrant workers seeking assistance can call 6536 2692 or visit the Centre, which is the only foreign workers’ resource centre open daily except for Mondays and public holidays.
