Around 40 Migrant Workers Centre (MWC) staff and volunteer ambassadors fanned out on 19 March 2020 in search of workers who required accommodation due to the Malaysian Movement Control Order (MCO).
Most workers they came across had their accommodation arrangements. The MWC team came across a few who were unable to find accommodation and referred them through the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) temporary relief centre, located at Jurong East Sports Hall.
This was the MWC’s first of two nights of operations. The MWC staff, together with volunteer ambassadors consisting of migrant workers from various countries, rendered immediate assistance to unassisted Malaysian workers. So far, the team has combed 25 areas island-wide for these unassisted workers.
Looking Out for Each Other
MWC Executive Director Bernard Menon said: “MWC and our ambassadors will continue to work with the authorities to take care of all our migrant workers, across any issue that might crop up through this difficult period, regardless of nationality.
“What's most important is that we all stay together, look out for each other and keep our social compact strong. Our migrant workers are part of our community and are determined to play their part in this effort too.”
The MWC Team will continue their operation tonight.
