The Migrant Workers' Centre's (MWC) Helpline has once again proven to be useful to foreign workers in Singapore.

This time, MWC was alerted to cases of unhappiness amongst foreign workers staying in a makeshift dormitory within a large warehouse facility in the eastern part of Singapore.

Helpline Call

NTUC This Week understands that upon receiving the distress call to its 24-hour Helpline on Sunday evening 20 December 2015, the MWC responded immediately to check on and assist the affected migrant workers.

Together with the police and Manpower Ministry officers, MWC found the employer had provided unacceptable and unsafe housing for the workers.

A check by our reporting team found cramped bedding conditions in containers, where up to 10 workers were housed in long containers with poor ventilation. Fire risks were also noted with loose wires hanging precariously from extension plugs, with signs of cooking appliances in use within the space. The team also discovered unhygienic sanitary conditions with the provision of just one toilet for the use of nearly 35 workers.

During interviews with the workers, they also complained of being locked up each day after work and not being allowed to go out except for one day in the month when they had received their salary.

MWC Assistance

MWC's Executive Director Bernard Menon, who led his team of officers during the operations, urged all migrant workers to contact its 24-hour Helpline should they face any difficulties or require any assistance or information on their rights and protection.

"We will respond swiftly, and where necessary, work with the local authorities to ensure the problems are addressed and resolved without delay.

“We would also like to caution all employers to act responsibly towards their migrant workers and comply with the regulations governing their care and protection. Failure to do so can attract stern action, which may include court fines, and in serious cases, imprisonment," said Mr Menon.

At press time, NTUC This Week understands that MOM will be investigating the employer for allegations of salary payment offences and possible flouting of dormitory and housing rules. MWC will be on standby with emergency housing and relief for the workers should the need arise.
