Not one to be contented with just doing her job, Yip Lai Fong, 41, has always embraced the spirit of continuous learning to do better for herself in order to offer more to the patients under her care.

Since starting her profession as a patient care assistant after her O-Level examination in 1994, Lai Fong’s determination to improve her life has seen her taking decisive steps to further her education.

She first took up a Diploma in Nursing and then a specialist course in emergency nursing before pursuing her studies further with a degree. She attained a Bachelor in Health Science (Sydney University) from the Singapore Institute of Management.

These steps have allowed her to climb the ranks – from a registered nurse to senior staff nurse to her current position as nurse clinician at Sengkang Health Pte Ltd.

“My knowledge helps me better communicate with my patients, and connect with them. Knowing more about their medical conditions also helps me better care for them,” she shared.

“I believe that we must always keep on learning in life. Medical science is always changing and to do well in our work, we must always keep pushing ourselves to learn more in order to continue performing well at work,” she emphasised.

Lai Fong’s exemplary work performance has allowed her to attend numerous courses on medical trauma and disaster management both locally and overseas. With her experience and knowledge, Lai Fong has given back by mentoring younger nurses and supporting hospital research.
