She might have only possessed secondary school qualifications and a weak command of English when she first joined Singapore Aero Engine Services (SAESL) as an operator in 2005, but a strong desire to progress further in her career saw aircraft technician Giam Siew Chu, 38, challenge herself by going back to school after 20 years.
With the support and encouragement of her management and colleagues, Siew Chu proactively sought English language proficiency courses and later successfully obtained a NITEC in Technology (Mechanical Technology).
“I realised that what I knew was too little and this led me to gradually expose and upgrade myself.
“I enjoyed what I was doing and wanted to progress at work. So I took up a NITEC course. Although it was quite long and demanding, my company was very understanding in helping me manage.
“Things are progressing so quickly at the workplace, and in order to keep up, I have to continuously look at learning new things,” said Siew Chu.
Subsequently, she progressed to the level of a qualified aircraft technician through SAESL’s trainee technician programme where she graduated with a Higher Certificate in Aerospace.
