Mr Lim Boon Seng was first elected to the Singapore Union of Broadcasting Employee... executive committee as an executive member in 2007, rising to become the first vice-president in 2013.
One of the key attributes Mr Lim displays is genuine care for members. In a recent retrenchment exercise at MediaCorp, he surfaced a case of a laid-off member who contracted cancer and was in desperate need of extended medical coverage. Both the union and the Human Resources (HR) Department worked out a special arrangement with the insurer to extend medical help for eight extra months post-retrenchment to reduce the financial impact of his increasing medical bills.
Despite the fatigue of working through midnight shifts, Mr Lim finds time to encourage new staff to join the union. He patiently explains the importance of union membership, and this has become a relationship building tool with fellow colleagues. He stays on after his midnight shift to attend meetings and attend to workers’ grievances.
He also actively attends Ong Teng Cheong Labour Leadership Institute classes during his rest days to upgrade himself, to remain relevant to the union and his members.
