NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng commended 47 homegrown companies on 3 November 2019 for leveraging technology to succeed.
He was speaking as guest of honour at the Singapore Prestige Brand Award ceremony held at The Ritz-Carlton.
“In this age of disruptive technology, many successful companies are investing heavily in technology to solve their problems and increase their productivity.
“Whether you are moving into e-commerce or acquiring new machinery to better your service standards or production line; constant product innovation by seizing new possibilities through disruptive technologies is where businesses can up their game,” he said.
Mr Ng also drew a comparison between the Singaporean and French workforce.
Although the local workforce was deemed more productive, it was only so because Singaporeans work longer hours, he said.
Mr Ng added that the French are effectively as productive as Singaporeans when it comes to productivity per hour. He attributed this to France’s technology adoption.
“By embracing technology, our workforce too can become more productive,” he said.
Mr Ng also emphasised that in Singapore, the Government is supportive and that the Labour Movement works with companies at the macro level to help them succeed.
“If we pair our technological possibilities with our vibrant workforce, I believe we will have the ecosystem to flourish,” he said.
Mr Ng concluded by stating that NTUC looks forward to working with more SMEs to forge new possibilities for both companies and workers, and that SMEs include the local workforce in their plans as they invest in technology.
