320 senior members from 34 unions kicked off this year’s U Live Games. Taking part for the first time is the Singapore Airlines Staff Union (SIASU) which participated in nine-ball pool. Four new unions - Healthcare Services Employees’ Union (HSEU), Ngee Ann Polytechnic Academic Staff Union (NPASU), Public Utilities Board Employees’ Union (PUBEU) and Union of ITE Training Staff (UITS) – joined in the running event.
Started three years ago, the Games aims to get active agers to stay healthy through sports and competition. What began as a three-event competition now includes seven sports: golf, bowling, nine-ball pool, badminton, running, table tennis and Indoor Sports Mania. The last events were this year’s additions.
“I had fun playing for my union at the Golf event, and am happy that U Live continues to have such competitions for us,” said participant, 74-year-old Ong Tiong Hin from the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers’ Union (SMMWU).
He received this year’s Most Active Ager Award.
Winners of the Games will be recognised at the U Sports Awards Night on 20 June at Downtown East.
