- A year-long campaign “U Care for Singapore ~ Celebrating SG50” was also launched where U Care beneficiaries and supporters design their own SG50 cards and pen well wishes for the nation’s 50th birthday -

The Labour Movement launched the first run of the annual Family Recreation & Fun (FRF) Carnivals 2014 on Sunday 8 June with Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean as the Special Guest. Organised and sponsored by NTUC Club, the FRF Carnivals allow lower-income union members and their families to enjoy a day of fun and entertainment at Downtown East at no cost.

The NTUC Care and Share Department, with the support of NTUC Club, also announced the start of a year-long campaign titled “U Care for Singapore ~ Celebrating SG50” which will culminate in a mass display in 2015. U Care beneficiaries and supporters were invited to design their own unique ‘SG50’ cards to the theme of “Hope, Heart and Home” and pen their well-wishes for the nation’s 50th birthday next year. Similar activities of designing the ‘SG50’ cards will also be conducted at the subsequent FRF carnivals and other U Care events throughout the year.  More details of the mass display in 2015 will be shared at a later date.

Mr Zainal Bin Sapari, Assistant Secretary-General and Director, Care and Share Department, NTUC, said, “By starting the SG50 celebrations early, we want to engage our U Care beneficiaries and supporters over the next 12 months through this meaningful activity.  Collectively, these well wishes from the Labour Movement will engender the sense of pride and belonging among our participants; as well as express our hopes for a better Singapore and better lives for all.    Besides supporting our low-income union members through various U Care Fund programmes, the FRF Carnivals provide a great opportunity for families to spend quality time together without having to worry about the costs.  We are very grateful to NTUC Club for their sponsorship which helped create fond memories for these families. This is part of our U Care’s mission of making a difference and touching lives.”

Six runs of the FRF Carnivals will be held this year, which amount to a total of $1.5 million in sponsorship value from NTUC Club, and will go towards helping 15,000 low-income union members. In total, the FRF Carnivals would benefit some 60,000 low-income union members and their families, with each recreation package catering to a family of four.

“This year marks the seventh year that NTUC Club has organised the FRF Carnival for our lower-income union members to enjoy a fun day of bonding with their families. Over the years, more than 300,000 members and their families have had their family day-outs at Downtown East and we will continue caring for their well-being through fun. As the Refreshing Downtown East redevelopment continues, we are committed to ensuring that the workers of Singapore will have affordable fun recreational options and we’re happy to continue organising these Carnivals for them,” said Mr Yeo Khee Leng, Chief Executive Officer, NTUC Club.
