The Labour Movement welcomes the setting up of a Small Claims Employment Tribunal as announced by the Ministry of Manpower today (24 April). The proposed tribunal will provide another avenue for all employees to resolve their statutory or employment disputes in an affordable and quicker manner. Especially for workers who are not covered under the Employment Act, they may soon be able to seek redress on salary-related disputes.
Our union members currently have the benefit of the unions guiding and helping them resolve disputes at the company level. In addition, our unions can also help members with their workplace grievances such as unfair dismissals.
We also welcome MOM's announcement that the current tripartite mediation framework will be enhanced so that more union members in non-unionised companies can benefit.
We are seeking feedback from our unions and will work closely with our tripartite partners on the proposed tribunal as well as enhancements to the tripartite mediation framework.
