As part of the national SGfuture dialogue series announced in December 2015, the Labour Movement has embarked on its own series of engagement sessions under the SGfuture “A Learning People” initiative. The ‘SGfuture: Labour Movement Series’ aims to get working people of all ages to embrace and embark on learning for life.
Conducted by the Labour Movement’s various communities, the ‘SGfuture: Labour Movement Series’ targets workers of all ages, including young workers aged 18 to 35 (Young NTUC), active agers aged 55 and above (U Live), working women and working parents (U Family), professionals, managers and executives (PME Unit), as well as union leaders. Starting from January 2016, a total of eight engagement sessions will be conducted with the last session to be held in April 2016, involving some 400 participants.
The engagement sessions aim to garner ground-up, actionable ideas on how Singapore can become a nation of lifelong learners, which can then be actualised through projects by the participants themselves. Through such projects, the Labour Movement also hopes to drive a mind-set change towards learning, and get more Singaporeans to take charge of their own training and upgrading.
Mr Desmond Choo, Executive Secretary of Young NTUC, who spearheads the Labour Movement series, said: “The Labour Movement seeks to build a skilled and resilient workforce needed for changing economic and social needs. To do so, we recognise the need to cultivate a culture of lifelong learning amongst all working people, regardless of what stage of their work life they are in. We hope this initiative will generate some good ideas that our participants can, very importantly, take ownership of and act on to get more in the community involved in embarking on their own learning journeys – only then will it be effective and sustainable.”
The outcomes of these engagement sessions will be shared at the end of the Labour Movement Series.
