The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has submitted our nomination of veteran union leader Mr K Karthikeyan (aged 54), Vice-President of the NTUC Central Committee and General Secretary of the United Workers of Petroleum Industry (UWPI), to the Special Select Committee of Parliament for nomination by the Committee for appointment by the President as Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP).
Brother Karthikeyan formed the Singapore Petrochemical Complex Employees’ Union (SPCEU) in 1986 and has been a union leader since (Note: SPCEU merged with UWPI in 2001). As a union leader, he has served his members with dedication and care, paying particular attention to their welfare and rights, workplace safety and health and skills upgrading needs. He has also built good rapport and working relationships with the tripartite partners through his various representations on tripartite committees and statutory boards.
If Brother Karthikeyan is appointed as an NMP, the Labour Movement would have an additional voice who will speak up for workers’ interests and welfare in the Parliament. He would be the tenth union representative since 1992 to be nominated for appointment as an NMP. Please see ANNEX A for the list of former and current NMPs from the Labour Movement.
