Since 1999, key leaders from the Labour Movement have visited workers in the essential services sectors during the Lunar New Year to thank them for putting their work and duties ahead of holidays and personal celebrations.
On the first day of the Lunar New Year, Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong and key union leaders greeted some 60 workers from Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Changi General Hospital in a visit led by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). PM Lee and Mdm Ho Ching were accompanied by NTUC President Mary Liew, NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng, NTUC Central Committee members as well as union leaders from the Singapore Airlines Staff Union (SIASU), SIA Engineering Company Engineers and Executives Union (SEEU) and Healthcare Services Employees’ Union (HSEU).
At Changi Airport Terminal 3, PM Lee and Mdm Ho, together with Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung, greeted Singapore Airlines’ cabin crew and pilots who were flying to London and Manila that morning, as well support staff on shift at the Singapore Airlines Cabin Crew Control Centre. At Changi General Hospital, they wished healthcare workers including doctors, nurses allied health and ancillary staff. LNY gifts, which included red packets and mandarin oranges, were presented to the workers in the spirit of the festive season.
