Ahead of the Labour Movement’s May Day Celebrations 2019, NTUC Secretary-General (SG) Ng Chee Meng shared this year’s Labour Movement May Day Message at a media sharing session on Monday, 22 April 2019. The message is penned by NTUC President Mary Liew and SG Ng and can be found at this

Elaborating on the message, SG Ng shared how the Labour Movement has and will always put workers at the heart of everything we do. The Labour Movement understands that cost of living remains a key concern of our workers, and will continue to address this in both the immediate and long-term.
To help ease some of these current anxieties, in addition to the slew of initiatives announced by NTUC FairPrice in March 2019 to help workers alleviate the cost of everyday essentials, NTUC Foodfare and Kopitiam will be dropping the prices of hot coffee and tea to 50 cents at its network of close to 100 coffee shops and food courts. Over 1.7 million NTUC union members, Pioneer and Merdeka Generation Singaporeans stand to benefit from this initiative. They will also be making its affordable breakfast sets and Rice Garden outlets more accessible for all. (Refer to Annex A – Media Factsheet)
In the longer-term, helping workers have better work prospects remains a key priority. NTUC will be accelerating the adoption of Company Training Committees (CTCs), with our unions working closely with companies to help both workers and companies transform for the future. NTUC is targeting CTCs in 1,000 companies across all six Industry Transformation Map groups, benefitting some 330,000 workers, in the next three years. To operationalise this, a dedicated group of training specialists will work with our union leaders and industrial relations officers to implement CTCs on the ground.
The Labour Movement hopes that the above initiatives will help ease some of the anxieties that our workers are facing today, as well as position them well for better work prospects for the future. Because what matters to our workers, matters to us.
