Labour Movement Goes on Island-Wide Visits to Appreciate Workers On First Day of Lunar New Year

NTUC and our affiliated unions continued our yearly tradition to visit workers on Lunar New Year (LNY) this year, with a series of island-wide visits to some 3,000 workers across 9 unionised company locations.

NTUC and our affiliated unions continued our yearly tradition to visit workers on Lunar New Year (LNY) this year, with a series of island-wide visits to some 3,000 workers across 9 unionised company locations. The following national leaders were invited to and joined unions in thanking workers from the public transport, port and hospitality sectors, for putting their work and duties ahead of holidays and personal celebrations during LNY. LNY gifts, which included angbaos and mandarin oranges, were presented to the workers in the spirit of the festive season.

DPM Heng Swee Keat appreciating taxi drivers and airport workers
 
DPM Heng, NTUC President Mary Liew, NTUC Secretary-General (SG) Ng Chee Meng, NTUC Central Committee (CC) members and union leaders visited Changi Airport Terminal 3 (T3) early this morning to show their care for and appreciation to workers who provide essential services during the LNY festive period.
 
DPM Heng, NTUC President Mary, NTUC SG Ng, NTUC Vice President Ong Hwee Liang and NTUC CC member Sazali Zainal, joined the National Taxi Association (NTA) leaders in spreading cheer to taxi drivers who provided transport services to Singaporeans and travellers alike. They were accompanied by Senior Minister of State (SMS) for Transport Lam Pin Min and Senior Parliamentary Secretary (SPS) for Social and Family Development and for Education Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, who is also advisor to NTA. NTA leaders also distributed gift bags at the other three airport terminals this morning, reaching out to 1,000 taxi drivers in total.
 
Island-wide visits by unions to thank workers
 
From as early as 4.00 am this morning, the National Transport Workers’ Union (NTWU) went on their annual visits to various rail and bus depots. They greeted more than 600 bus and rail captains, operations staff and other public transport workers, who continued to work behind-the-scenes and serve commuters throughout the first day of LNY. The union leaders were accompanied by Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing, who is also an advisor to NTWU; SMS for Transport Janil Puthucheary; and Minister of State for Manpower Zaqy Mohamad .
 
Minister Chan then joined union leaders from the Attractions, Resorts and Entertainment Union and the Amalgamated Union of Public Employees to greet some 200 back-of-house and gaming staff at the Resorts World Sentosa and operations staff at the Sentosa Development Corporation respectively.
 
Meanwhile, NTWU and SMS Janil continued their visit separately to the bus interchange and MRT station at Jurong East, greeting some 150 bus captains and station managers on duty. They were accompanied by Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for National Development Desmond Lee, who also joined in the LNY celebrations with the workers.
 
Over at the PSA Pasir Panjang Terminal, leaders from the Singapore Port Workers’ Union and Port Officers Union brought the LNY cheer to close to 1,000 port workers, who keep our ports running smoothly 24/7, 365 days a year. They were accompanied by Minister in Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Finance and for Education Indranee Rajah and SPS for Transport Baey Yam Keng.
 
Lastly, to show care for our workers providing services through the busy LNY eve, NTUC SG Ng greeted 50 cashiers, store attendants and other retail workers at the NTUC FairPrice outlet at Rivervale Mall in Sengkang on 24 Jan, Friday. He was hosted by Group CEO of NTUC Enterprise and CEO of FairPrice Group Seah Kian Peng and leaders from the Food, Drinks & Allied Workers Union.
