K. Thanaletchimi is Labour Movement's latest NMP

NTUC Central Committee member K. Thanaletchimi, 50, has been selected by the Parliament’s Special Select Committee to fill one of the nine Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) seats, announced the Office of the Clerk of Parliament on 17 March 2016.

Ms Thanaletchimi was among the 41 proposed names of individuals submitted to the committee when the general public and functional groups were invited to do so on 2 February 2016.

Responding to the announcement, Ms Thanaletchimi said: "I am gratified to have learnt the news of my appointment as a NMP. I hope to raise issues, concerns and challenges faced by the workers against the backdrop of economy slowdown with special emphasis on health care concerns and women at work.

"I am committed to be the voice of the workers so as to provide a non-partisan views and to be truthful to my conscience whilst I surface matters with conviction and provide suggestions with confidence."

Along with the other eight nominations who come from several industries, Ms Thanaletchimi will be presented the Instruments of Appointment by the President of Singapore on 22 March and will take her oath at the next parliamentary sitting on 24 March 2016.

In a statement released by the Labour Movement, NTUC President Mary Liew said: “NTUC is very pleased that Ms K Thanaletchimi has been nominated by the Special Select Committee of Parliament to fill one of the NMP positions. With her passion and heart for the people, I am confident that she will speak up for workers’ interest and welfare in Parliament so as to help them and their families achieve a better life both at work and at home.”

Ms Thanaletchimi’s other appointments in the Labour Movement include the presidency of the Healthcare Services Employees’ Union and the chair of NTUC Women’s Committee.
