INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATIONS 2015 “APPRECIATING HER”
ON 8 MARCH 2015 (SUN), 9.30 A.M. AT NTUC DOWNTOWN EAST@PASIR RIS
OPENING ADDRESS OF MS DIANA CHIA, PRESIDENT, NTUC
Background of International Women’s Day
The International Women’s Day, which falls on the 8th of March every year, is a significant event that marks the contributions and recognition of women all over the world. It has gained so much awareness that it is now celebrated throughout the month of March. To commemorate this special occasion for women, NTUC Women’s Development Secretariat (WDS), has organised today’s event with the theme “Appreciating Her” and a series of events, centred around this theme.
Teaser Event on 3 March 2015
IWD 2015 celebrations by NTUC Women’s Development Secretariat kick-started its series of activities with a teaser event on 3 March 2015 where we invited the Raffles Place working community and members of the public to visit NTUC WDS booth and pen appreciating notes on a specially designed postcard to the women they appreciate. We had a great crowd that day and we believed the postcards should have reached the women recipients by today. What a pleasant surprise they will get. Now let us hear how our leaders and public expressed their appreciation to the women of their lives. We gave out 1000 post cards.
If you have missed us that day, you still have the opportunity to pen your appreciation notes on these special postcards at the Begonia Terrace.
Key Thrust of IWD 2015 – Honouring & Appreciating the Women
Early this morning, I flagged off 2 runs for 700 runners who took part in the event RUN for HER jointly organised by 5 unions (BATU, CIEU, SISEU, SMEEU and UWEEI). Some ran for their wives, others ran for their mothers and caregivers. I thought it was a good way to show how they appreciate the women in their lives. Well done!
Hunt for Best Companies for Mums 2015
In view of the many hats and roles that women need to juggle every day, another ongoing effort by WDS includes identifying the best companies in terms of their work-life policies and family friendly work practices for employees, in particular working mothers. We hope to continue to recognise the companies that create a happy and conducive environment for our women.
Job Fair for Mature Workers
Today, we have also organised a job fair targeting to assist mature workers who are keen to return to work. A total of 17 employers have come together to offer various opportunities to the job seekers.
Bazaar and Movie
There are also many more activities at the Bazaar and movie screening for you and your families to celebrate this special day.
Conclusion
I would like to commend NTUC for this effort and urge all our tripartite partners to work closely with us to create a family friendly environment at the workplace for more women to return and remain in the workforce.
On this note, I would like to thank NTUC WDS and NTUC Women’s Committee led by Sister Nora Kang and Sister Mary Liew for organising this event and I wish everyone a happy International Women’s Day once again and have an enjoyable time.
