A union-management task force was set up about two years ago to look into safety issues surrounding lightning and how to protect workers at Changi Airport.
According to the Changi Airport Group (CAG), there had been several cases of workers being struck by lightning while working at the airport’s apron area.
From 2005 to 2014, an average of four lightning incidents happened each year.
The outcome of the task force – wireless headsets replaced the wired ones and lightning protection devices were installed at the aircraft bay.
CAG said there has only been one incident this year, but none in 2015.
Workers have also been told they can temporarily stop work if they still feel unsafe during inclement weather.
“Coming out with practical ideas to solve a problem fundamentally, that is what we are here for, not just to do a plaster job. Where there are concerns, we will struggle with you. We can do it, no matter how complicated it is,” said Changi Airport Group CEO Lee Seow Hiang.
